Recovery can be time consuming or impossible.

> Records: Include in complaint to local, state or federal authorities (See next tab for more on extracting IP data)

   a. Email records include time stamped data. If email received from hacker, the header source includes ip address of hacker.

   b. Exchange records have historical data with time stamp, ip address and destination wallet of hacker. DO NOT CLOSE the exchange account. Keep some cash or bitcoins in the account to retain the historical record online.

   c. Bitcoin wallet records remains forever in the Blockchain. Hacked wallets can be traced to one or more destinations (e.g. hacker syndicate wallet).

 

> Complaint:

  a. Local Police Department (PD) is best place to start. However, local PDs will likely claim they don't have jurisdiction over remote exchanges or wallets.

  b. IC3/NW3C -- for Internet crimes. Thousands reported weekly. Fill out the form, but be prepared for long wait or no response and no courtesy updates.
